Laughing gas for Dental Procedures
Before the Procedure
Before anything else, you must give your consent to use sedation and consent for dental treatment. You need to understand the reasons for sedation and the following risks included:
In some cases, your oxygen levels may drop. If this happens, you will be given oxygen through an oxygen mask. A dental assistant will carefully check your breathing throughout the procedure.
Fasting
You can have a light meal, like jelly, soup or toast, and a drink two hours before the procedure. After that, you should have nothing to eat or drink until after the procedure.
During the Procedure
Laughing gas is given in the dental chair. You breathe the gas through a small nosepiece that sits on your nose. It does not cover your mouth.
The Laughing gas makes the patient feel sleepy and relaxed. You will still be aware of what is happening around, but will feel dreamy and floaty, warm, and have tingling of the hands and feet.
You may be a little forgetful, and might not have any memory about the procedure afterwards.
While administering the Laughing gas, the assistant will monitor your level of sedation to ensure that you can still cooperate and follow verbal instructions.
The dental treatment will be performed, while you are sedated. Local anaesthesia may also be administered so that you will not feel any pain.
After the Procedure
You will recover from the effects of the Laughing gas very quickly once your dental treatment has been completed. You will be observed for a brief period after the sedation.
Some patients may feel a little sick or nauseated. If you feel sick or vomit, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Be careful not to bite your lip or cheek while it is numb.
