Considered sedation pathways for patients who feel anxious about dental care.

For patients whose fear, past experience, or clinical needs make routine dentistry difficult, we offer a range of sedation options — from a mild inhaled relaxant in the chair to IV sedation and general anaesthesia through our partner facility, Geelong Sleep Dentistry. Suitability is always determined by clinical assessment.

About Sedation Dentistry

Support for patients who find the dentist difficult, not just those who dislike it.

Sedation dentistry describes a group of techniques used to reduce anxiety or discomfort during dental treatment. It ranges from a mild relaxant breathed through a mask to being fully asleep under general anaesthesia. It is not required for most routine visits, and it is not suitable for everyone — a clinical assessment with your dentist, and where relevant a specialist medical review, determines which pathway, if any, is appropriate for you.

Before you proceed: Any sedation or anaesthetic carries risk, as does any dental or surgical procedure. Your dentist will explain the relevant risks, benefits and alternatives for your individual circumstances, and you're welcome to seek a second opinion from another appropriately qualified practitioner before deciding.

Sedation Pathways

Four options, matched to your assessment.

Local anaesthetic is used for most routine dental procedures. The remaining pathways are considered for patients with dental anxiety, complex treatment needs, or specific clinical indications.

Standard
I.

Local Anaesthetic

The standard pain-management approach for most dental procedures. Numbs the treatment area while you remain fully alert and aware throughout.
Inhalation
II.

Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)

A mild inhaled relaxant delivered through a nasal mask. You remain conscious and responsive, and the effects wear off shortly after the mask is removed.
Conscious
III.

IV Sedation

Conscious sedation delivered intravenously at Geelong Sleep Dentistry, a dedicated surgical facility. Considered for longer or more complex procedures.
Asleep
IV.

General anaesthesia

For extensive cases or where other pathways are unsuitable, following specialist medical review. Delivered through Geelong Sleep Dentistry.
Why Patients Consider Sedation

What sedation can offer, for suitable patients.

Outcomes and suitability vary between individuals. These are potential benefits to discuss with your dentist, not guarantees.

01.

Supporting patients with dental anxiety

For patients whose fear has kept them away from the dentist, sedation is one option your dentist may discuss as part of a plan to make treatment more manageable.
02.

Working with a strong gag reflex

Where a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth or gums make treatment difficult, sedation may allow your dentist to work more comfortably and precisely.
03.

A calmer treatment experience

Sedation is intended to help you stay calm and comfortable in the chair. Your response to sedation is individual, and your dentist will monitor you throughout.
04.

Potential for fewer appointments

Some treatment that would otherwise need several visits may, in suitable cases, be planned into fewer appointments. This depends entirely on your individual treatment plan.
Is Sedation Right for You?

Reasons patients ask us about sedation.

This list is a starting point for a conversation with your dentist — not a self-diagnosis tool. Whether sedation is appropriate for you depends on your medical history, the treatment planned, and a clinical assessment.
