What to do for common dental emergencies
While you wait
- Gargle with warm salt water (do not swallow) — this may provide relief from a mild toothache.
- Use dental floss gently to remove any food caught between the teeth.
- Apply a cold compress (an ice pack wrapped in a cloth) against the side of your face — this helps reduce swelling and provides pain relief.
- Pain relief medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may help — always follow the instructions on the packet, or speak with your pharmacist.
Within minutes
- Find the tooth and handle it very carefully — hold by the crown (the white part), never the root.
- If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline. Avoid scrubbing or removing any tissue fragments attached to the root.
- Try to place the tooth back in the socket if you can do so gently, then bite down on a clean piece of cloth or gauze to hold it in place.
- If you cannot reposition it, store the tooth in milk, saline, or in your saliva (between your cheek and gum). Avoid plain water if possible.
- Call us immediately on (03) 5278 2666 or attend your nearest emergency department.

- If bleeding continues, replace the gauze with a fresh piece and try again Call us on (03) 5278 2666 if firm pressure does not control the bleeding

It is not a substitute for a clinical examination by a registered dental practitioner. Always seek prompt professional dental advice if you are experiencing a dental emergency.
Outcomes of any dental treatment, including the management of dental emergencies, vary depending on individual circumstances such as the time elapsed, the nature and severity of the injury, underlying health factors, and the condition of the tooth or surrounding tissues. A successful outcome cannot be guaranteed in any case.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding with treatment, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Your dentist will discuss the specific risks, benefits and alternatives of any recommended treatment with you so you can make an informed decision.
Same-day appointment availability is subject to the existing appointment schedule and clinical priority on the day. We will always be honest with you about the soonest available time. Health fund rebates depend on your individual policy, level of cover, annual limits and waiting periods. CDBS eligibility is determined by Services Australia.
For life-threatening symptoms — including severe swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, signs of a serious infection (high fever, spreading swelling), or symptoms of a head or jaw injury — call 000 or attend your nearest hospital emergency department immediately.
