Tooth Extractions in Norlane Geelong.
When a tooth can't be saved.
A tooth extraction simply means removing a tooth from its socket. It's a routine, commonly performed dental procedure — though for us it's never the first option. Wherever a tooth can be repaired or restored, we'll explore that with you first.
There are times when a tooth has been affected by decay, damage or infection beyond the point where a filling, crown or root canal can reliably restore it. In those situations, carefully removing the tooth can help protect your neighbouring teeth and your wider oral health.
Before any tooth is removed, your Norlane dentist carries out an examination and, where needed, dental X-rays. We'll talk you through what we see, what the options are, and the benefits and trade-offs of each — so the decision is one you make with us, not one made for you.
On the day, the area is numbed with local anaesthetic before the tooth is removed. Some minor bleeding afterwards is common, and a blood clot forms in the socket as a normal part of healing. You'll be given clear aftercare instructions before you leave.

Common reasons a tooth is removed.
From assessment to healing.
Caring for the area afterwards.
Settling in
- Eat soft foods. Stick to a soft diet while the anaesthetic wears off and keep meals gentle.
- Rest the area. Avoid brushing the teeth directly next to the extraction site for the first day.
- Keep brushing elsewhere. You can brush and floss your other teeth as normal.
- Manage swelling. A cold compress held against the cheek can help if there's swelling.
Over the following days
- Rinse gently. After the first day, gentle rinsing can help keep the area clean.
- Ease back in. Return to your normal brushing routine around the site after a couple of days.
- Keep it clean. Keeping the extraction site clean supports healing.
- Pain relief. Ask your dentist about suitable pain relief options if you need them.

The information on this page is general in nature and is provided for educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for personalised clinical advice and does not constitute a diagnosis, treatment plan, or recommendation.
- Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Sedation and general anaesthesia carry their own risks, separate from the dental procedure itself. Risks and benefits should be discussed with your dentist and the treating anaesthetist before you proceed.
- Suitability for sleep dentistry — and the appropriate level of sedation — is determined on an individual basis, after a clinical and medical assessment.
- Outcomes vary between patients. Recovery times, individual responses to medication, and clinical results are not the same for everyone.
- No outcome is guaranteed. Sleep dentistry is one of several treatment delivery options; it may not be appropriate for every patient or every procedure.
- Before proceeding with any treatment, you are entitled to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
- Any cost figures, rebate amounts, or health-fund coverage details discussed in consultation are estimates only and may vary depending on your individual policy and clinical circumstances.
This page does not contain testimonials about clinical outcomes, before-and-after clinical photography, or claims of guaranteed results, in line with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Dental Board of Australia advertising guidelines for regulated health services. The image of the Geelong Sleep Dentistry day procedure suite shows the facility only and does not depict any patient or clinical procedure.
