Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are devices that are capped over a partial tooth or implant and are cemented in place by your Norlane Dental dentist.

Fixed restorations that protect a damaged tooth or replace one or more missing teeth. Every recommendation follows a clinical examination, with options and any risks explained beforehand.

Restore, Strengthen, and Smile Again

What they are?

Two ways to rebuild a tooth, or replace one that's gone

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth, restoring its shape and strength once too much natural structure has been lost to decay, a crack, or a large filling. A bridge spans a gap left by one or more missing teeth, anchoring a replacement tooth to the healthy teeth (or implants) on either side.

Both are fixed restorations — they stay in place day to day rather than being removed like a denture. Your dentist will explain whether a crown, a bridge, an implant, or another option best suits your situation after an examination and, where needed, imaging.

When they're considered

Situations where a crown or bridge may be recommended.

These are common reasons a dentist may raise a crown or bridge as an option — final suitability always depends on an individual clinical assessment.

Cracked or fractured tooth

A crown can hold a compromised tooth together and protect it from further damage.
Extensive decay

Where too little healthy tooth remains for a standard filling to be reliable.
After root canal treatment

A crown is often placed to protect a tooth that has been root-treated.
Discoloured or misshapen teeth

A crown can even out the appearance of a tooth that whitening can't correct.
Missing one or more teeth

A bridge can close the gap using the neighbouring teeth or implants for support.
Supporting an existing bridge

Crowns are also used as the anchor points of a new bridge.
Why they help

What a well-fitted crown or bridge can support

  • Restoring a more even bite and everyday chewing comfort
  • Helping keep opposing and neighbouring teeth in their normal position
  • Reducing the chance of adjacent teeth drifting into a gap
  • Making a damaged tooth's surface easier to clean and maintain
  • Supporting a more even appearance to your smile and speech

    The process

    What treatment can involve

Every case is different, and your dentist will confirm the exact steps, appointments, and timeframes for your treatment plan. In general terms:

    1. Assessment
Your dentist examines the tooth and may take X-rays to check the root and surrounding bone.
    2. Preparing the tooth
Local anaesthetic is used before the tooth is gently reshaped to make room for the crown.
    3. Impressions
A digital scan or physical impression captures the exact shape needed for your crown.
    4. Temporary crown
A temporary crown protects the tooth while your permanent crown is made in a dental laboratory.
    5. Fitting
Once ready, the permanent crown is checked for fit and bite, then cemented into place.

    Important information

This page provides general information about crowns and bridges and is not a substitute for individual dental advice. Suitability for any treatment can only be confirmed following a clinical examination by a registered dentist. As with any dental or surgical procedure, crowns and bridges carry risks, and outcomes and treatment duration vary between patients — your dentist will discuss options, risks, and alternatives with you before treatment begins. If you have concerns, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
