An abscess will not usually go away on its own.
Abscesses can form at the tip of a tooth root, often after deep decay or a crack lets bacteria reach the nerve, or in the gums alongside a tooth. Symptoms can include throbbing pain, swelling, a bad taste, fever, or a pimple on the gum.
Even if the pain eases, the infection may still be present. Prompt assessment helps prevent the infection spreading.
