Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. There are two broad types: complete dentures, worn when all of the teeth in an arch are missing and need to be replaced, and partial dentures, used when some natural teeth remain.
The most appropriate option for you depends on your oral health, the number and position of any remaining teeth, and what you would like to achieve. Complete dentures
Used when all of the teeth in an arch are missing and need to be replaced. A complete denture restores the look of a full set of teeth and supports everyday function such as chewing and speaking.

Partial dentures
Used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture fills the gaps left by missing teeth while working alongside the teeth you still have, which are assessed and accounted for in the design.

Making dentures usually takes a few weeks across several appointments, so the fit can be checked along the way.

Your dentist examines your mouth and determines which type of restoration is best suited to you, then explains the plan.

Impressions
Impressions & bite
Impressions are taken of your jaw, along with assessments of how your jaws relate to one another and how much space is between them.
03.
Fabrication
Make the denture
Your final denture is made to the agreed design, using the records taken at your earlier visits.
04.
Fit & review
Fit & adjust
The denture is fitted and adjustments are made as necessary so it sits comfortably and functions well.
New dentures may feel a little unusual or loose for a few days or weeks while the facial muscles and tongue adjust, and while you get comfortable putting them in and taking them out. Minor irritation, soreness and an increase in saliva are common at first and usually settle as your mouth adjusts. If discomfort persists, let your dentist know.

A daily routine
Looking after dentures well helps keep them clean, comfortable and in good condition.

Clean
Clean daily
Clean your dentures with fluoride toothpaste or soap and water before soaking. Brush them gently, as you would your natural teeth — brush rather than scrub.

Soak
Soak to freshen
Soaking in a denture-cleaning solution helps remove stains and bacteria. Only use a soaking solution if your dentures have no metal components, as it can tarnish metal.
03.
Handle
Handle with care
Dentures can break if dropped. Clean them over a bowl of water or something soft, such as a folded clean towel, to cushion any slips.
04.
Overnight
Rest overnight
Removing dentures before sleep is generally recommended to give your gums time to rest. Keep them submerged in warm — not hot — water so they do not dry out or change shape.
