A ceramic crown, designed & fitted in a single Geelong visit.

CEREC technology lets us scan, design and mill a ceramic crown in our Norlane practice — so for many suitable patients, the restoration can be completed in one appointment, without a putty impression or a temporary crown. Suitability is confirmed after a clinical assessment, and outcomes vary between individuals.

A same-day crown is made from a single block of ceramic — designed, milled and fitted in the chair.

Same-day crowns are sometimes called chairside crowns or CEREC crowns. They are made possible by CAD/CAM technology — CAD for Computer-Aided Design, CAM for Computer-Aided Manufacturing — which has been refined over more than thirty years. Where a tooth is suitable, the steps from preparing the tooth to bonding the final crown can be carried out in one appointment.

Because the crown is designed digitally, a same-day approach can also preserve more of your natural tooth, as it often requires less preparation and filing than a conventional crown. Whether it is the right option for a particular tooth is determined during a clinical assessment.

How it works

Scanned, designed and milled — in the chair.

One appointment

From preparation to a bonded crown, where the tooth is suitable.

I.
Prepare & scan

A digital 3D scan

After the tooth is prepared, your dentist uses an intraoral camera — smaller than the tip of a ballpoint pen — to capture 3D images. There is no putty-like impression to bite into.
II.
Design

A precise digital model

From the scan, a 3D model of the tooth and crown is drafted with detailed measurements — including the spacings, ridges, pits and grooves that help it sit and function naturally.
III.
Mill

Milled from one block

Once the design is approved, an in-practice unit mills the crown from a single ceramic block. Milling itself typically takes only a few minutes.
IV.
Fit

Fitted the same day

Your dentist checks the fit and bite, then bonds the crown to the tooth — completing the restoration in the same visit for suitable patients.

Not every tooth is suitable for a same-day crown. The most appropriate option for you is discussed after a clinical assessment; all treatment carries both benefits and risks, and outcomes vary between individuals.

Why patients consider a same-day crown.

Considerations

Whether the benefits apply to your situation is confirmed at assessment.

01.

Fewer appointments

Because the crown is made in-practice, a return visit to fit a separately manufactured crown is often not required for suitable teeth.
02.

More comfortable

The digital scan replaces the putty-like impression paste some people find unpleasant, and there is no temporary crown to manage in between.
03.

Tooth preservation

A same-day approach often needs less filing than a conventional crown, which can help conserve more of your natural tooth structure.
04.

Function restored sooner

Teeth affect how you speak, smile and eat. Completing the crown in one visit can restore comfortable function on the same day.

A note on temporary crowns: with a conventional crown, a temporary is worn until the final crown is ready, and a temporary that loosens can leave the prepared tooth exposed. A same-day crown reduces this interim stage. Individual circumstances differ — your dentist will explain what applies to your tooth.
