Tooth fillings, matched to your natural teeth.
When decay, a crack or wear damages a tooth, a filling can restore its shape and function. At our Norlane practice we use tooth-coloured materials in most cases, and explain your options before treatment begins.

Fix it while it’s small.
A small area of decay can often be repaired with a simple filling. Left untreated, decay can spread deeper into the tooth, and a larger restoration, a crown or root canal treatment may then be needed.
Your dentist removes the decayed or damaged part of the tooth and fills the space, shaping the filling to match your bite. Most fillings can be completed in a single visit.

When a filling helps
Reasons you may need a filling.
Your dentist will confirm what is needed after an examination and, where required, X-rays.
N° 01
Decay
Tooth decay
Cavities caused by decay are the most common reason for a filling.
N° 02
Damage
Chipped or cracked teeth
Small chips and cracks can often be repaired with a filling. Larger breaks may need a crown.
N° 03
Wear
Worn surfaces
Grinding, acid erosion or brushing too hard can wear teeth down. A splint may also help if you grind.
N° 04
Replacement
Old or failing fillings
Fillings do not last forever. Leaking or broken fillings can be replaced.
N° 05
Sensitivity
Sensitive areas
Some sensitivity is caused by exposed or worn areas that a filling can cover.
N° 06
Appearance
Dark or stained fillings
Older metal fillings can be replaced with tooth-coloured materials where clinically suitable.
Materials
Choosing a filling material.
Most fillings we place are tooth-coloured composite resin, which is bonded to the tooth. For larger restorations, a porcelain inlay or onlay, sometimes made same day with CEREC, may be recommended. Your dentist will explain the pros, cons and costs of each option.
Your appointment
Having a filling, step by step.

01.
Assessment
Your dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray if needed to see how far the decay extends.
02.
Numbing
Local anaesthetic is used so the tooth and surrounding area are numb.
03.
Preparing the tooth
Decay or damaged tooth structure is removed and the area is cleaned.
04.
Placing the filling
The filling material is placed in layers, shaped and set with a curing light.
05.
Checking your bite
We polish the filling and check your bite, then give you aftercare advice.
Filling options we may discuss.
Please note
Options shown are general information only. Suitability depends on the size and position of the filling and is confirmed after assessment.
