How do I know if my child is eligible for the CDBS?

Services Australia sends a letter to eligible families, and you can check through your Medicare account in myGov or by calling Medicare on 132 011. Our team can also check for you.

How much is the CDBS benefit?

The benefit is capped over two consecutive calendar years and is indexed each year. Services Australia publishes the current amount, and we can tell you your child’s remaining balance.

Eligible services are bulk billed, so there is no out-of-pocket cost for services within your child’s remaining benefit. We explain any costs before treatment.

Q: Does the CDBS cover braces?

No. Orthodontic treatment, cosmetic treatment and hospital-based services are not covered by the CDBS.

The CDBS is a Medicare program that provides a capped benefit for basic dental services over two consecutive calendar years. Eligibility is means-tested and generally linked to the family receiving a relevant government payment, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A.

The benefit cap

How the benefit cap works.

Each eligible child has a capped benefit over two consecutive calendar years. The cap is set by the Australian Government and indexed each year, and Services Australia publishes the current amount. Any unused amount from the first year carries over to the second year, but not beyond it. We explain expected costs and ask for your written consent before treatment.

Your dentist examines your child’s teeth and explains any treatment needed.

We explain the costs, how much of the benefit will be used, and ask for your written consent.

Bulk billed

Eligible services within the remaining benefit are bulk billed, so there is no out-of-pocket cost for those services.
