5 Tips To Keep Teeth Healthy Over The Holidays From Norlane Dental Aesthetics and Implants

by | Dec 7, 2020 | Norlane Dentist Tips

The holiday season is well and truly under-way, and most of us are surrounded by festive treats that are difficult to resist and avoid.

To help you get through the holidays with healthy teeth, we have listed some key tips on minimising the risk of tooth decay and keeping your teeth as healthy as you can during this season.

Eat treats in just one sitting

It’s better to eat your chocolates in just one sitting or as part of a meal, rather than to chew on them all day. Eating chocolates and candies over time is worse for your teeth than eating them all at once.

Teeth and tape don’t mix. Scissors are your tool of choice

It’s almost Christmas, and you’re left wrapping up to the last minute. In rush, you keep the roll of paper in one hand while ripping off strips of tape with your teeth. STOP! This can damage teeth. Instead, use scissors to cut off strips of tape.

Watch out for toffee and candy canes

Christmas chocolate boxes often come with popular toffees and candy canes. Toffees can stick to restorations, such as dental fillings, crowns, bridges, or veneers, while candy canes are known to break our teeth. Eat chocolates that melt and leave the mouth quickly to limit any damage.

Counter the effects of acidic drinks with water

Christmas would not be perfect without a sparkling drink that packs a punch on your overall oral health! The acids, sugar and alcohol levels in sparkling drinks can damage your teeth if regularly consumed.

The same thing applies when drinking a lot of soft drinks and even juice. Don’t think that because your soft drink is sugar-free, it is already safe.

These drinks are high in acids and can cause as much, if not more damage, to the enamel of the teeth.

Enjoy your drinks moderately, and make sure you limit the erosive effects on the teeth enamel by drinking lots of water in between glasses.

Always remember to brush your teeth

Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time.

If you don’t brush your teeth regularly, you could put your teeth and gums at risk of developing dental problems.
